Currently, I’m freelancing and always looking for interesting contract work. I am an accomplished systems administrator, MySQL DBA*, programmer (C, C++, Objective C, Java, perl, and PHP are my strongest), with a preference towards developing MVC-architected web sites. I have a working knowledge of HIPAA regulations concerning software and data storage security, medical billing and coding systems, and personnel. I am all-around tech nerd, not limiting myself to the confines of computer systems, I even enjoy older technology such as mechanical watches, steam engines, and water clocks.
My last job was working for Intellicare in South Portland, Maine. I was an infrastructure engineer in a pseudo-skunkworks environment with a lot of potential. I had my hands in a lot of various technological parts of the company, including working with the developers to help them transition into an Open Source-based environment. I was the sole implementer of the bulk (90% or more) of the Open Source, Macintosh, and AD integration that was going on during my tenure. From that, I learned that I really don’t have any interest in corporate governance :-)
Prior to that, I was with LibraryThing in Portland, Maine. I performed all systems administration functions, as well as technology plan development and deployment, network and systems architecture, and I was the guy who fixed the office Airport. I was hired as a PHP developer, which I didn’t get to do as much of as I had hoped. I did, however, learn a great deal about social networking websites in the 2000’s and made some great contacts.
For the previous two years, I worked for Wowpages, also in Portland, Maine. I was hired as the head programmer, but took on a lead role in all technological aspects of the company. I managed and maintained an on-site data center containing Windows, Linux, and MacOS-based clients and servers connected via multiple T1 connections via BGP through a nice little Cisco box to the Internet. One of my first tasks there was to break into the router to make config changes!
In the 4 years before joining Wowpages, I worked as a toy store manager, forklift driver, and computer store sales rep. These were all acts of rebellion after founding/running/selling my own startup company Linuxbox.com from 1994 to 1999.
Linuxbox.com was arguably the first online service dedicated solely to developers to help them code, distribute, document, and support their software. Linuxbox provided free hosting to the open source community and paid hosting to commercial developers who wished to use our infrastructure. I did everything from designing the website to sending out paper invoices, later I had help :-). After a good run of time, we were acquired by OpenAvenue, who was acquired by StarBase, who was acquired by Borland. Naturally, nearly all traces of my accomplishments have been lost to history, but I am still very proud anyway! I wonder what ever happened to the 100,000 shares of OA I got…
I own a cute little home in a way-too-quiet neighborhood in South Portland, ME that I am currently heating with biofuel.
*Some people doubt there is such thing as a “MySQL DBA”. I beg to differ.
